I have read horror stories about companies that do not understand organic SEO and end up doing something that is not and their sites get sandboxed by the search engines. The search engines are very strict about how you market you site and if they think you are trying to pull the wool over their eyes, and then they will make sure that you do not rank well or even at all.

I have a friend who works as an SEO consultant and he tries to explain to people how important organic SEO is and some of them still do not get it. They hire him to do a few things, thinking that they can handle the rest on their own and then their site suffers when they do not follow his advice. They usually try and blame him but most of the time; he can pinpoint what they did wrong to tick off the search engines.

I know that if I ever try and incorporate a website with my company, I will be hiring my friend the SEO consultant to handle everything about my internet marketing. The search engines have me scared enough to never try and do anything by myself.
